The San Jose Southern is a layout based on the Denver & Rio Grande Western standard gauge line from Minturn Colorado to Tennessee Pass. Heavy manifest freights, passenger service, a local, helper locomotives and 3% grades, with the Rocky Mountains providing the backdrop. Twenty-two miles of railroad torture.
Since I am only trying to represent a short distance with my layout, I chose a linear walk around style track plan with a lower level for staging. The layout features a 140' seamless aluminum backdrop of prototype scenes painted by Greg Gray. Bench work is a double deck open grid. The track plan is a single track main with 30 minimum radius and a 145' linear mainline run. Sub-roadbed is modified spline with homasote roadbed. Track work is Micro-Engineering code 83 for the mainline, code 70 for yard and industry tracks and code 55 to represent little used sidings. A Digitrax DCC system is employed for control of locomotives and turnout routing.
This is a layout under constitution, with backdrop, bench work wiring and track work complete.
Scenery is in the construction phase, with 50% of the scenery complete, and other scenes started.
