Mark Tomas' D&RGW
My layout is a freelance Denver & Rio Grande-themed pike, which includes HO standard gauge, HOn3 narrow gauge and some dual-gauge action. It is set in September, 1955. Motive power includes narrow gauge steam, standard gauge steam, and first-generation diesels, all of which are sound equipped. Scenery includes steep mountains, canyons, tree-covered slopes and rushing rivers. Track is mix of Precision Scale, Walthers/Shinohara, Micro Engineering and Peco code 83, 70 and 55 flextrack, with some custom turnouts, most of which are #6 and #8. Grades are maximum 3% on standard gauge and 5% on narrow gauge. Structures are all kit-built at this time. Helper engines are the rule on both gauges, due to steep grades. Digitrax DCC powers the layout, which sits on open-grid and L girder benchwork, utilizing most of a 1,000 square foot basement.
