Layout: John Scherr’s Rio Grande Southern

This two-level 16-foot X 22-foot HOn3 layout depicts the Northern Division of the Rio Grande Southern between hidden staging (Ridgway / Durango) and Rico. While no particular era is modeled, all scenes are prototypical. Scenes at Butterfly and Pandora are nearly complete and feature the Butterfly Mill and the Pandora Gray Mill built by professional model builder Matt Dillow. Other scenes as trains pass through Placerville, Vance Junction, Ophir, Matterhorn, Trout Lake and Lizard Head are about 60% complete. Rico is operational but modeling is just beginning.  When the line from staging to Rico passing through a helix in the adjacent room and Lost Canyon is completed, continuous running will be possible.

Layout details include: modified L-Girder construction using ¾ inch plywood and poplar lumber; Micro Engineering code 55 track with 26-inch minimum radius; Fast Tracks #5 turnouts; Lenz DCC for operation and scenery as dramatic as possible. The main line is about 130 feet. The branch line is about 20 feet. Most of the layout is enhanced by a backdrop painted by Greg Gray.
